Here are the 10 most useful shortcuts that will help you type faster using the on-screen keyboard of your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. The screenshots have been updated for iOS 7.

Tip #1: If you want to type special characters with accent marks (like the letters à or è), simply tap and hold the corresponding alphabet key for a while and it will pop-up a list of related accented characters for you to choose from. Don’t release the key before making a selection else the choices will disappear.

Tip #2: When you are done typing a sentence, double-tap the space bar on the keyboard and it will automatically insert a dot (or period) followed by a space. The next alphabet that you type will be written in uppercase without you having to press the Shift key.

Tip #3: The iOS keyboard is pretty smart at adding apostrophes. For instance, if you need to type “doesn’t”, just forget the apostrophe and quickly type “doesnt” – the keyboard will automatically insert the apostrophe at the appropriate place. You can also press and hold the comma key to get the apostrophe without switching to the numeric keyboard.

Tip #4: The numeric keyboard (.?123) on your iOS device shows the dollar ($) symbol by default. However, if you need to type the Pound or the Euro currency symbol, just hold the $ key and you’ll see a long list of alternative currency symbols.

Tip #5: If you want to change the style of quotation marks or need to use a longer dash punctuation mark instead of the default hyphen, press and hold the corresponding key. For typing the degree symbol in your email message, switch to the numeric keyboard and hold the ’0′ key for a while.

Tip #6:
Typing the whole sentence in capital letters is often considered rude but there can be instances where you may have to type a word or two in uppercase.

In the default setting, you’ll to have to tap the Shift key after typing every single character or you can “Enable Caps Lock” under Settings –> General –> Keyboard and then double-tap the shift key to turn it into a Caps lock key. They will stay dark until you press the key again.

Tip #7: While you are inside the Safari browser, type only the domain name and then press and hold the dot (.) key. It will offer you an option to add popular domain extensions (or TLD) like .com, .org or .net to your web address with a tap.

Tip #8:
You can also use the dot key in the Mail app of your iPhone or iPad to type email addresses quickly. While typing an email address in Mail, press and hold the dot (.) key and you’ll get a list of domain extension to auto-complete your email address.

Tip #9: You can split the iPad keyboard into two and type faster with both your hands while holding the device. While the on-screen keyboard is visible, press and hold the keyboard icon in the lower right and choose the Split option. If the option isn’t available on your iPad, go to Settings -> General -> Keyboard and toggle the Split Keyboard option.

Tip #10: Here’s another useful but undocumented keyboard trick that will help you quickly switch between numerical (123) and alphabetical (ABC) keyboards on your iOS device.

Let’s say you are typing a document and need to insert an email address in your text. Now the “@” symbol is not available on the alphabetic keyboard so you’ll first have to switch to the numeric keyboard (?123), tap “@” and then again switch to ABC mode.

That’s three keystrokes for typing one key. There’s a simple option as well – just press the ?123 key, slide the finger to reach the “@” key and then lift the finger up to release the key. You can use the trick to type numbers, punctuations marks, currency symbols and all other characters that’re found only on the numerical keypad of your iPhone or iPad.

Gmail offers inline previews for a couple of popular web services including YouTube, Flickr, Picasa and Yelp. What that means is if someone sends you a link to a YouTube video in an email, you can watch that video right inside your Gmail mailbox without clicking the link. You can similarly preview Flickr photo albums and Yelp ratings of places in the email itself.

Inline previews improve your Gmail experience but they aren’t enabled by default – you’ll have to turn them on manually from the Labs tab under Gmail -> Settings.

Gmail introduced inline previews in 2009 but they never expanded the scope beyond YouTube and Flickr. A new Chrome extension called Iframely builds upon on the concept of inline previews and add support for nearly every web service that’s out there including Facebook, SlideShare, Instagram, Vimeo, Imgur, Tumblr and Twitter.

With Iframely installed, you can not only preview almost any link that’s included in your email message but also read full web pages inside your mailbox. For instance, if a friend has sent you a link to a news story from the New York Times or the CNN website, you can read that full story inside Gmail without opening new tabs in the browser.

It also supports Instagram photos, Soundcloud audio clips, Twitter tweets (if the message contains a link to a tweet, you can read the corresponding tweet), watch Vimeo videos – all inside your Gmail.

Bonus Feature: Add Inline Images in Gmail

Iframely offers another useful feature for your outgoing message. While you are writing an email inside Gmail, just paste a link to any web image – like an Instagram photo – and Iframely will automatically insert the corresponding picture as an inline image to your email message.

Chrome may sometimes display a mixed content warning since some of the embedded content could be served from non-https websites – you can click the shield in the address bar to remove the warning.

Here are 10 tips and tricks for Microsoft Word that will help you get things done faster and more efficiently than ever before. I have created the animated GIFs with Word 2013 but the tricks will work just fine with older versions of Microsoft Office as well. Let’s get started.

1. Select Text Quickly

You can triple-click anywhere within a paragraph to select the entire paragraph in Word. Or press the CTRL key and click anywhere within the sentence to select the entire sentence.
You can also select rectangular blocks of text in a Word document, similar to the marquee tool in Photoshop, and apply formatting to the selected area. Hold down the ALT key and drag your mouse to select any rectangular area.
Select Rectangular Block

2. The Extended Clipboard

Word has a useful “Spike” feature that you can use cut (move) text and images from multiple locations in a document and paste them all at once to a different location.
To use Spike, select some text, images or other objects in your document and press CTRL+F3 to move that selection to the Spike. You can highlight and append more entries to the same Spike using the CTRL+F3 shortcut. Now press Ctrl+Shift+F3 to paste the content of the Spike anywhere in the document.

3. Move Around Faster

If you are working on a lengthy Word document, you can press the Shift+F5 keyboard shortcut to cycle through the spots that you have edited most recently. Also, when you open an existing document inside Word, the same Shift+F5 shortcut will take you to the location that you were working on when the document was last closed.

4. Change the Sentence CASE

Select some text in Word and press Shift+F3 to quickly change the case of the selection. It toggles between UPPERCASE, lowercase and Camel Case (first letter in capital) and should come handy if you’ve accidentally left the CAPS LOCK key on while typing.

5. Write Anywhere on a Page

Did you know that you can use your Word document as a whiteboard and write your text anywhere on the page. Just double-click wherever you want to type your text and start writing.

6. Convert to Plain Text

When you copy snippet from a web page into Word, all the styles and formatting are retained. There’s however an easy way to remove the styling from any block of text in Word – just select the block and press Ctrl+Space Bar and the rich text will be transformed into plain text.

7. Move Text without Copy-Paste

Most people use the Cut-Paste (Ctrl-x Ctrl-v) route to move text from one location to another within a Word document but there’s an alternate way as well. Highlight any block of text, press F2 and then place the cursor at the spot where you wish to move that text. Press Enter and the selection will be moved.

8. Insert Unicode Characters

If you know the Unicode code of a character, you can quickly add it to your document by typing the code followed by Alt+x. For instance, the code for Indian Rupee symbol is 20B9 – type 20B9, press Alt+x and the code will be replaced by the actual Rupee symbol.

9. Add Placeholder Text

There’s a Lorem Ipsum generator built inside Word to help you insert filler text anywhere inside the document. Type =rand(p,l) and press Enter to insert ‘p’ number of paragraphs each having ‘l’ lines. For instance, =rand(3,6) will generate 3 dummy paragraphs  with 6 lines each.
Lorem Ipsum Word
The other option is =lorem(p,l) that fills your Word document with pseudo-Latin text commonly used in web design projects.

10. Word’s Hidden Calculator

Your copy of Microsoft Word has a hidden calculator that can handle all the common arithmetic operations. You can write the Maths expression in your document, highlight it and press the Calculator button – the results of the calculation will be displayed in the status bar.
Go to Word Options -> Quick Access Toolbar, switch to All Commands and add the Calculate Command to your Quick Access Toolbar.

Dropbox and SkyDrive allow you to have “Shared Folders” where a folder is shared between all members of the group. Any member can contribute files to the shared web folder and such a thing is ideal for collaborative efforts like for sharing photos with guests after an event. People can view photos uploaded by other users as well as upload their own to the shared folder.

A limitation with these “shared folders” is that the folder owner must invite a user before he or she can add files to the folder.

OneTimeBox, a web app that went live at the recently concluded MIT hackathon (coding contest), takes a different approach to shared folders. The app creates a disposable, public web folder where anyone can add files as long as they know the unique URL of your shared folder.

There’s no registration required and neither do you have to invite anyone as a contributor. Just share the URL of your folder with friends and they’ll have full access – including delete permissions – to the files in that folder.

OneTimeBox is built using Meteor.js and the source code can be found on Github. Internally it uses the Filepicker API which uses the Amazon S3 service for storing files in the cloud. The app is neatly designed though you cannot add file to the shared folder from your mobile devices.

The YouTube website is probably the world’s biggest library of songs and music videos that you can watch on any device. You can play your favorite music on the YouTube website and let it stream in the background while you work on other important tasks.

This is only possible on desktop computers and not mobile devices since YouTube on mobile stops playback as soon you put the video player in the background. The YouTube app, or the YouTube website, needs to be in the foreground else the video pauses itself.

There’s however an easy workaround that will let you play any YouTube video in the background on your iPad or iPhone. Here’s the trick:

Open the Safari browser on your iOS device and play any of your favorite song on the YouTube website. Now tap the Home button to go to the home screen, or swipe to switch to a different app, and you’ll notice that the YouTube video has stopped playing.

Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open the Control Center and tap the Play button. Voila! The paused YouTube video will resume playback and you can now switch to any app on your iOS device while the audio streams in the background.

If you are using an older model of iPhone or iPad that has not been upgraded to iOS 7, you can still use the same technique to “listen” to YouTube videos playing in the background. Instead of the swipe-up gesture, double-press the home button and swipe the notifications bar from left to right. Press the “Play” button to resume the paused YouTube video.

Whether you are reading ebooks on the iPad, browsing web pages or responding to emails on the iPhone, you can finally use YouTube to play some great music in the background

Swipe up the screen to access the iOS 7 control center

Double-press the home button and swipe right to Play videos in iOS 5.

Google is bringing the Chromebook to India. These Intel Celeron based laptops will be available in Croma and Reliance stores starting next week or you can pre-order them now from the Flipkart website. The 11.6″ Acer Chromebook is available on Flipkart for 23k while the 14″ HP Chromebook can be had for 27k.

Google Chromebooks, except for the Pixel with touchscreen, are inexpensive and thus are the best-selling laptops on Amazon.com.

That said, you’ll have to pay a nice premium to get your hands on one of these Chromebooks in India. The Acer 720 retails at $240 on Amazon while the price in India is $370 or 50% more. HP’s 14″ Chromebook is $300 in US but will be available here for $435.

I have been using the Chromebook for several months now and while it is a decent machine for browsing the web – sleek, lightweight, feels solid – the battery life and performance isn’t great especially when streaming web videos. The laptop doesn’t look “cheap” but it does feel underpowered. The new Chromebook models hopefully have improved in this area.

Google Chromebook ships with the Google Chrome browser and you do not have an option to install any other software on the machine. No Photoshop, no Microsoft Excel and no iTunes. You can however install any of your favorite Chrome extensions on the Chromebook and thus get to do a whole lot more than just browse the web.

Chromebooks are cloud-based and you are expected to use Google Drive to store all your files. In fact, when you buy a Chromebook, you get 100 GB of additional Google Storage for 2 years that would otherwise cost you $120. You can also attach your Flash drives to the available USB ports for files that are not on Google Drive.

So should you spend $370 on a web-only Chromebook? If you are always connected to the Internet and need a second laptop mostly for writing emails and web-surfing, probably yes but for everyone else, there are more options in the 20k-30k range that offer better value for money. Or you may even consider a previous generation iPad in that price range.

Have you ever wondered why or how the search results from sites like CNET or Google Play/iTunes look so different from search results for your own website? That happens because Google 'understands' these sites better than yours. This is not to say that your site doesn't meet the 'quality criteria', so to speak. Rather, it merely means that Google can identify and understand the structure of such sites, and can provide a precise yet comprehensive and accurate overview for them. You can do that too by structuring the data/content on your website, so that search engines know exactly what your site is about. Based on your structured data, Google can show appropriate information on Google Now or Knowledge Graph.

Imagine a review website where users write product reviews. This site should naturally be structurally different than a news blog, or a portfolio website, or a product brochure/showcase website, or a wiki. You wouldn't them all to be treated the same way in search results now, would you? Structured Data will help Google provide searchers with accurate and interactive information they can easily relate to. This will not only help your website's CTR by a large degree, it will also build up your 'SEO-optimization points', meaning that search engines will be more hospitable for your website.

To help you participate in structured data features, Google has just recently released two news tools, the Data Highlighter, and the Structured Data Markup Helper tool.

Data Highlighter

The Data Highlighter basically helps identify what sort of content you have on your site, and teaches Google the pattern of structured data about events on your website. You can now tell Google whether your site is among the following types listed.
  • Local Business
  • Products
  • Articles
  • Software Applications
  • Movies
  • TV Programs
  • Restaurants

By using the Data Highlighter, you won't have to modify the HTML of your existing page. Start by logging into Google Webmaster Tools, and then from the left sidebar, go to Optimization >> Data Highlighter. Then click on the button on the right that says Start Highlighting.
You will then be asked to enter a URL, and then choose its type from among the seven listed above. You can also choose to tag just that page, or other pages with the same consistent formatting too. The latter would be a good option for a blog, for example.
After this, you will see an overview of that page, and you will have to tag each part of the page with your mouse. You can, for example, specify the author, the publishing date, and the average rating for an article. Tagging options vary depending upon what option you chose (i.e. Article, Product etc).

The process will take a few minutes, at the end of which the content will be 'highlighted' automatically.

Structured Data Markup Helper

As an alternative to the Data Highlighter where you let Google do the work for you, you can use the Structured Data Markup Helper tool to edit your HTML, and optimize your site using the markup generated by Google (for advanced users).

It works in much the same way as Data Highlighter. You first have to tag various page elements with your mouse. Then, this tool will generate sample HTML code for you with microdata markup included. You can use this code as a reference for implementing structured data directly into your site's source code.

Using these tools, you can really stand out from the competition. You can tell Google exactly what your website is about, and we think these tools are a huge step forwards.

Have you ever considered delivering your content for multiple regions and in multiple languages? More and more websites are going international (being made available in multiple languages) these days, and you can easily see why. The broader the audience, the better. And unless you have a region specific website, there's no reason why you should not go international. However, there's a lot more to it than just translation, as emphasised by these quick tips from Google for internationalization.

1. Change your markup instead of your style sheets

Learn where to use markup and where to use CSS for internationalization (shortened to i18n after the starting character i, and the 18 character spaces between the first and the last n). Things like language are inherent to the content present on page. So in this case, markup should be used for i18n. You can't always rely on CSS. So use attributes like lang and dir (for direction) with the html tag as shown below.
<html lang="en" dir="ltr">
Note: In some cases, i18n markup might not be supported by the markup language, as is the case with XML. In such cases, CSS may be used.

2. Use a single CSS file

When using different languages and directions (LTR or RTL), do not use a separate style sheet for each locale. Use a single CSS file, and bundle together existing CSS rules with their international counterparts. A single file makes it easier to maintain things, and only a single file needs to be loaded. Consider a scenario where the default CSS file loaded, but the international file failed to load. A single file approach would be better in that case.

3. Use [dir='rtl'] attribute selector

A language can either have an RTL (Right to Let) or LTR (Left to Right) directionality. RTL directionality requires different markup than LTR. So you can use the [dir='rtl'] attribute selector in this case. For example;
aside {   float: right;}[dir='rtl'] aside {   float: left;}

4. Look carefully at position properties

As in the example above, you often need to reverse or mirror the position properties for RTL and LTR languages. For example, what's aligned left in LTR should be aligned right in RTL. So you should look at all the position-related properties for LTR, and mirror them for RTL. These include margins, padding, text-align, float, clear, and so on. There are tools out there as well that do the job for you, such as CSSJanos .

5. Look closely at the details

Just like with CSS positioning properties, you might want to mirror some other details as well, such as box-shadow for images, text-shadow for text, arrows, background, markers, and so on. Same goes for JavaScript positioning and animations.
Another very important aspect is the fonts and font sizes. A font size for one language might seem adequate, but it may be too small for other languages. For example, Arabic texts usually need to be bigger than English texts because they're difficult to see in a smaller font.

Google Tips to Optimize International Websites

Over the past few months, Google is continually being criticised for its frequent and infamous Pandas and Penguins. Surprisingly, people are increasingly ditching PageRank in favour of Moz (formerly SEEOMoz) Domain Authority, and the trend has been on the rise for quite some time now. So does that mean that PageRank's authority is being undermined? And what exactly is Domain Authority? More importantly, how do the two stack up against each other? In this post, we attempt to answer some of these questions.

Google PageRank

As most of you know by now, Google PageRank is a measure of a site's popularity on a scale of 0-10, with 10 being the highest. It mostly depends on the number of nofollow and dofollow backlinks on your blog, and it is one of the factors that effect your SERP (Search Engine Result Page) position.

Moz Domain Authority

Now the Domain Authority metric by Moz is a bit like PageRank in the sense that it is a domain-level rank. But it is more concerned with how a website will perform in search results. It is measured on a scale of 100, and is updated frequently - once or twice every month.

Differences between PageRank and Domain Authority

To get a better understanding of why people are trending more towards Domain Authority these days, let us look at the difference between the two rank metrics.

Frequency

Moz Domain Authority, at any given time, is usually more up-to-date than Google PageRank. Pr only gets updated quarterly - every three months. But DA changes once or twice every month. So even if a site has radically improved, its PR might not get updated for another couple of months, which is a lot of time.

Accuracy

Google PR is measured on a scale of 0-10, which I think is one of the biggest problems with it. Google rates itself as 9, so you can really only go from 0 to 8 (rarely 9). Since the gradation is so crude and abrupt, you can't tell if you're going up or down or staying at the same place when you get the same PR score two times in a row. It's like being only able to adjust your thermostat in degrees of 10. Imagine going from 20 degrees to directly 30 degrees. There's no middle ground, no way to tell apart two temperatures both in the 20s.
With Domain Authority, you get a much finer scale of 0-100. So you now get a hundred grades instead of just 10. So you can monitor your progress and trends in much greater resolution, or detail.

Depth

Google PageRank is broadly based on the number of nofollow and dofollow links and backlinks. But there's a lot of other things that Google doesn't disclose. So when you see a PR figure of, let's say 5, you don't get to know the breakdown of points, or in other words, you don't know what things contributed towards this score. So we can see a lot of opacity in Google PageRank.
Domain Authority, on the other hand, is more transparent, and it tells about your progress in areas like Linking Root Domains, Total Links, MozTrust, MozRank, and so on. This way, you get to know exactly where you are going wrong.

Importance

Google employees have this tendency to disregard the actual importance of PageRank. They always advise people not to put much stock into it, as it is only one of the 200 signals Google uses to rank pages on SERPs.
"We only update the PageRank displayed in Google Toolbar a few times a year; this is our respectful hint for you to worry less about PageRank, which is just one of over 200 signals that can affect how your site is crawled, indexed and ranked. PageRank is an easy metric to focus on, but just because it's easy doesn't mean it's useful for you as a site owner."
On the other hand, Moz Domain Authority is relatively gaining momentum, and the constant improvements are making it more and more accurate and reliable. Who knows, in the coming months, DA might actually become a lot more important than PR?

Effect on SERPs

Although Google PR might not be given as much importance as DA in terms of search ranking, Google PR still has some effect on the SERP, whereas DA does not. This is probably why people still go for PR.
Another reason why PageRank is so popular is that, it is measured by Google. There's a whole psychological effect related to it, and people automatically tend to trust it. PR has been around for so long that almost everyone now knows about it.

Ever since the Yahoo Site Explorer shut down in 2011, internet marketers have been looking for a backlink analysis tool, which they found in the Moz Open Site Explorer. We've already seen how the trend is already sifting more towards Moz Domain Authority from Google's PageRank. Indeed, most SEO experts now also report on statistics from the Open Site Explorer (OSE), such as Domain Authority, Page Authority etc. So what are these metrics anyway, and what do they signify? More importantly, why should you start using OSE if you don't use it already? Let's take a closer look.

Open Site Explorer

Open Site Explorer (OSE) is a search engine that crawls, indexes, and keeps track of the backlinks to every website. It has trillions of URLs in its index, and each update aims at not only improving the speed and efficiency of the algorithm, but also to retain higher quality backlinks in the index while at the same time eliminating the lowest quality links, so that the index can be kept manageable as well as valuable at the same time.

OSE can be used to evaluate backlink data for upto four websites at the same time. For any single site, you can check the following metrics

  • Domain Authority
  • Page Authority
  • Linking Root Domains
  • Total Links
  • Facebook Shares
  • Facebook Likes
  • Tweets
  • +1s

(Note: You can check the link metrics for free on OSE. But for the social metrics, you have to become a Moz member)

One thing I like about OSE is that, for every backlink, you get to see the exact location of that link, and the title and Anchor text of that link. It will also tell you when a backlink is a nofollow link. That way, you can see where your links are coming from, where to get broken links or links without anchor text corrected, and so on. Furthermore, you can also see the Page Authority and Domain Authority for each of the incoming links to your site, so you can analyse trends and rate your most important backlinks.

Page Authority vs Domain Authority

Page Authority and Domain Authority are two of the most important metrics reported by the Open Site Explorer. Both are measured on a logarithmic scale of 0-100, which means that it'll be easier to go from 10 to 20, than to go from 80 to 90. These metrics are updated once or twice every month, a lot of SEO experts are using these metrics in their reports.

Domain Authority is a measure of how well a whole website will perform in search results. It is the probability of how well any arbitrarily picked webpage from a site will rank in SERPs. It is calculated based on a number of metrics, such as total links, linking root domains, MozTrust and MozRank etc, among other 40 signals. Although it can be used to monitor the strength of your site over time, a better usage would be to compare your site with other competitors, since OSE gets updated so frequently, and Moz takes more than 40 signals into account while computing the Domain Authority. So a score of 40 today isn't the same as a score of 40 an year ago, or an year from now - it changes!

Page Authority, on the other hand, measures the strength of an individual webpage. It is also calculated on the basis of MozRank and MozTrust, since they vary from page to page as well. The DA stays the same throughout the website (like Google PageRank), whereas the PA for each page varies.
